Creative Motorcycle Riding
By Ellen Moser
Have you ever ridden a motorcycle?
If you have, you already understand. If you haven’t, let me try to explain the mix of freedom, adrenaline, and joy that comes with it.
My motorcycle journey began in 1982—back when I was young, energetic, and just a little naïve. One day, driving home from work, I spotted a motorcycle sitting in someone’s yard with a handwritten sign: $500. I’d always wanted to ride, so I stopped, talked to the owner, and bought it on the spot.
There was just one small detail I’d overlooked: I didn’t know how to ride.
In fact, my very first motorcycle ride was on the back of the bike I’d just purchased, as the seller gave me a lift home. The next morning, staring at that motorcycle in my carport, I thought, How hard can it be? After a few cautious laps around the neighborhood, my confidence soared.
Soon, I was riding to work—without motorcycle gear. Picture dress pants, tall boots, and a vintage bike straight out of World War II. I was a laughingstock at the office, but I didn’t care. I was riding.
One of my first longer rides took me from San Jose to Santa Cruz. On the way back, I followed an experienced rider through winding roads, learning how leaning into curves gave you more control. I was hooked.
Later, I met my husband. At first, he rode on the back of my motorcycle—until one day he admitted he was too embarrassed to ride behind his wife. So he got his own bike, and from that moment on, we rode together.
Weekend trips turned into longer adventures, including a cross-country ride from California to Denver for a family wedding. We avoided freeways, chose curvy back roads, and camped along the way with our motorcycles piled high with gear. We looked ridiculous—and we loved it.
Riding through Canyonlands in Utah was unforgettable. Without a windshield, the landscape felt endless—vast, colorful, and alive. The adrenaline, the beauty, the connection to the road—it was pure magic.
That trip remains the best ride of my life, not just for the places we saw, but for the experience I shared with my husband. Even now, thinking about motorcycles brings me a sense of calm, gratitude, and quiet joy.
Two wheels gave me more than transportation.
They gave me adventure, partnership, and memories that still carry me forward.
