Inspiring Evaluations

Inspiring Evaluations

I used to hate criticism.

As a perfectionist, feedback felt like proof that I wasn't perfect.

That changed when I worked with Native American youth in a behavioral program where we followed a simple rule: five positives for every one negative. I learned that people are much more willing to hear criticism when they first know you believe in them.

That lesson became especially meaningful in Toastmasters.

I once watched an outstanding speech by James Jeffery, a two-time finalist in the World Championship of Public Speaking. His speech was funny, engaging, and inspiring. Yet his evaluator, Cynthia Stock, gave him specific "stretch goals" to make it even better.

James appreciated the feedback. I was amazed.

That's when I understood what a great evaluation should do: inspire and motivate, not crush.

Three Keys to Effective Evaluations

1. Know WHY you're evaluating.

Your goal is to help the speaker improve. Focus on two or three changes that will make the biggest difference—not everything they did wrong.

2. Know HOW to deliver feedback.

Use the sandwich approach: start with positives, offer specific suggestions, and finish with encouragement. Remember, your evaluation is your opinion, so use "I" statements.

3. Know WHAT to evaluate.

Consider the speech's purpose, structure, opening, key points, conclusion, and delivery—including voice, movement, and body language.

The ultimate test of a great evaluation?

The speaker walks away saying:

"I can't wait to try your suggestions!"

That's the power of constructive feedback.

And here's the bonus: when you evaluate others, you become more aware of your own speaking.

So volunteer for that next evaluation. You may help someone else become a better speaker—and become a better speaker yourself.
