Keeping It Human In The Age of AI
By Deb Peretz
AI Isn’t Taking Your Job — It’s Raising the Bar
The first time I used AI, I was stunned. In seconds, it produced work that used to take hours. Then came the headlines: jobs disappearing, automation accelerating, entry-level roles shrinking.
Reports from the World Economic Forum and Goldman Sachs warn that millions of jobs could be impacted by AI. That sounds alarming — and for routine, repeatable tasks, it’s true.
But here’s what most people miss:
- AI replaces tasks. It doesn’t replace humans.
- It can summarize meetings, draft emails, and analyze data.
- It cannot exercise judgment, build trust, or take responsibility.
- AI predicts language — it doesn’t understand meaning.
- It can generate confident answers — even when they’re wrong.
That’s why critical thinking matters more than ever.
Speed is automated. Discernment is not.
And what about emotional intelligence? AI can simulate empathy, but it can’t read a tense room, calm an angry client, or sense when a teammate is struggling. In high-stakes moments, human skills win.
The future isn’t humans versus AI. It’s humans plus AI.
The professionals who thrive will know how to collaborate with AI — not ignore it, not blindly trust it, but direct it. Think of AI as a brilliant intern. Fast. Efficient. Tireless. But it still needs leadership.
If your value is based only on producing information, that value is shrinking. If your value is based on judgment, communication, adaptability, and integrity, that value is rising.
Don’t compete with AI by trying to be faster.
Compete by becoming more human.
Because in the age of artificial intelligence, human intelligence is your greatest advantage.
