Practical Tips for our Troubled Times
By Denise Blanc
In 1999, the Edwards Dam on Maine's Kennebec River was removed after decades of blocking the river's natural flow. Almost immediately, fish returned, wildlife flourished, and a once-polluted ecosystem began to heal.
The story offers a powerful metaphor for communication.
Today, many of our conversations are "dammed up" by assumptions, polarization, and the inability to engage with people who think differently from us. When communication stops flowing, relationships suffer and divisions deepen.
So how can we remove these barriers?
I share three simple yet powerful ideas:
1. Be Present
Real communication begins with presence. When emotions rise or distractions take over, pause and take a few deep breaths. A calm mind is better equipped to listen and connect.
2. Listen with Curiosity
Instead of listening to respond, listen to understand. Ask open-ended questions such as, "What makes that important to you?" Genuine curiosity creates space for meaningful dialogue.
3. Look for Common Ground
Even when we disagree, there are often shared experiences, values, or goals. These small points of connection can open the door to stronger relationships.
Like a river, communication thrives when barriers are removed. By being present, listening with curiosity, and seeking common ground, we can bridge divides—one conversation at a time.
After all, understanding doesn't require agreement. It requires a willingness to listen.
