Quitters day
Quitters Day
Did you know that there is a special day in the year designated for quitters? Quitters Day, which falls on the second Friday of January, is the day when most people give up on their new year’s resolutions. According to an article on Forbes, “Almost 60% of Americans recently surveyed by Statista made New Year’s resolutions to save more money, eat healthier or exercise more this year”. According to the Forbes Health/OnePoll survey, popular 2024 New Year’s resolutions include, “improving finances (38.2%), losing weight (33.8%) and improving one’s diet (31.6%). Meanwhile, fewer people are focusing on goals like learning a new skill (8.8%), making more time for hobbies (7.1%) and traveling more (5.9%). The Forbes Health/OnePoll survey found that only 8% of respondents in 2024 say their past resolutions have lasted more than a month.
Now that we are done with the first month of 2024, where do you fit as it relates to your goals for this year? Are you among the less than 10% who made it past the first month and are still on track to accomplishing your goals for this year or you quit on them by quitter’s day? It is apparent that although most people may know what they want to accomplish and what needs to be done to accomplish the goals, they will still fail. That’s because you have to do something uncomfortable to do what’s out of your norm and break some habits in order to stick to the resolutions you set for yourself.
Below are some thoughts about what you can do to beat the odds.
- Be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Growth and transformation occur when you step out of your comfort zone. You cannot expect to get new results when you continue doing the same thing you were doing in the past.
- Set realistic goals and write them down in order of priority. These are goals that you can attain given your available resources. Examples of resources include time, money, skills, technology, and people.
- Pick the most important goal and work diligently to accomplish it. Put together a plan that involves the steps you must take to accomplish the goal and when you will do them.
- Get up immediately and get back on course when you hit a wall. Failure is inevitable, but your ultimate success is directly tied to the number of times you get up and get going. If you didn't make it past the first month, it is not too late to get back on course towards your goals.
- Find an accountability partner or coach who can help to keep you on track so that you can be one of the few people to accomplish your new years’ resolutions.
Here’s to 2025 filled with wins. To your success.
