There Is No Such Thing As A Black Thumb

There Is No Such Thing As A Black Thumb

Maybe I Don’t Have a “Black Thumb” After All 🌱

For the longest time, I thought I had a black thumb.

I could bring home the most beautiful houseplant, promise to take good care of it, and somehow watch it slowly give up on life. Too much water. Too little water. Not enough sunlight. Too much sunlight. Honestly, sometimes I felt like my plants were judging me!

But while preparing my Toastmasters speech, I started looking at the whole idea of a “black thumb” differently.

Maybe I’m not bad with plants.

Maybe I’ve just been choosing plants that don’t fit my lifestyle.

Think about it. Plants don’t care whether I’m organized, disciplined, or naturally good at gardening. They simply need the right environment and the right amount of care.

And that realization was surprisingly liberating.

I started thinking about my own habits. Am I someone who remembers to water plants regularly? Not always. Do I tend to overwater because I’m trying to be helpful? Absolutely! Sometimes, “loving” my plants a little less might actually be better for them.

That’s when I discovered the beauty of forgiving houseplants.

Snake plants, pothos, philodendrons, and monsteras can be wonderful choices for beginners because they can be relatively adaptable and don’t necessarily demand constant attention. For someone like me, that sounds much better than owning a plant that requires a detailed care schedule!

I’ve also become fascinated by the idea that even something as simple as a pineapple cutting can add greenery to my home with surprisingly little fuss.

The bigger lesson for me, though, goes beyond plants.

I realized that I often try to change myself to fit the things I want. But maybe I don’t need to become a “perfect plant parent.” I just need to find plants that work with the way I naturally live.

If I forget to water, I can choose a plant that tolerates it. If I tend to overwater, I can learn to step away from the watering can. And if I simply want some greenery without another responsibility on my to-do list, there are plenty of low-maintenance options.

So now, instead of saying, “I have a black thumb,” I’m trying a new phrase:

“I haven’t found the right plant that fits my life.”

That small change in perspective makes a big difference.

I don’t have to become a gardener. I don’t have to become more disciplined. I just need the right plant-and-person pairing.

🌱 The goal isn’t to become a perfect plant parent. It’s to find a little greenery that works with my life.
