Voices In My Head

Reflections at 76: The Voices That Shape Us
Turning 76 is a milestone that invites reflection. For me, it has been a journey of revisiting the many voices, lessons, and influences that have guided me throughout life. One memory, in particular, stands out — a moment from my childhood that still speaks to me today.
At seven years old, I was performing “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” I had rehearsed my lines, but when it was my turn, they completely slipped my mind. I froze on stage, a mix of fear and embarrassment washing over me.
Then, my coach stepped in — not with the words themselves, but with a gentle prompt that allowed me to continue. I finished the presentation, bowed, and received the approving smiles of my parents. And then, I looked into the back of the room — my grandmother was standing there. When I asked her what she thought of my speech, she told me never speak again because I was “not good at it.”
This memory reminds me that the voices in our heads often reflect the people who shaped us. Parents, grandparents, mentors, and teachers leave impressions that linger, guiding us long after their words are spoken. Some voices inspire confidence, while others instill caution. Both, however, shape who we become.
As I shared this story at Toastmasters, I realized that reflecting on these voices is not just nostalgia — it’s an exercise in understanding who we are and the legacy of influence we carry. All of these inner voices have shaped the way I approach life, face challenges, and nurture others.
Life’s journey is a tapestry woven from these interactions. The voices of our past continue to whisper lessons, encouragement, and wisdom. It’s up to us to recognize which ones to carry forward and which to let go.
At 76, I am grateful for the many voices that have spoken to me — those that still inspire, challenge, and guide me. By sharing my story, I hope others will reflect on the voices in their own lives, honoring those that matter most and embracing the guidance they offer.
Key Takeaways:
- Childhood experiences often leave lasting lessons.
- Reflecting on our influences helps us understand ourselves and our legacy.
Life is full of voices, some loud, some gentle. Paying attention to them can illuminate our path, even decades later.
