What About Me?

What About Me?

What if the key to personal growth is embracing the awkward, cringe-worthy moments?

That’s the message I shared during my recent Toastmasters icebreaker speech. In a world that constantly pressures us to appear "cool" or perfect, I’ve learned that true freedom comes when we let go of that fear and embrace our authentic selves—even if that means doing something a little cringy.

Whether it's stepping outside my comfort zone at work as a clinical researcher or volunteering with organizations like Food Not Bombs, I’ve found that growth happens when we get out of our heads and just do. And sometimes, that means doing things that might feel silly.

For instance, this year I’m getting ready for the Renaissance Fair in Hollister, where I’ll be dressing up as Thumbelina. I’m crafting an elaborate costume, complete with a giant organza flower. It's a bit over-the-top, it’s definitely a challenge, and there’s a lot of room for things to go wrong. But that’s part of the fun! Embracing the cringe in these moments allows me to tap into my creativity, try new things, and grow in ways I never expected.

So next time you find yourself hesitating because something feels "embarrassing" or "uncool," remember: embracing those moments can lead to incredible personal growth. Let go of the shame, have fun with the process, and let your authentic self shine—cringe and all.
