What My Toastmaster Journey Taught Me
By Linda Patten
When I look back on my life, I realize that every experience has prepared me for the next chapter.
From serving in the United States Army to leading international training programs and creating innovative workplace solutions, I've learned that leadership is about serving others, staying adaptable, and never losing your curiosity.
Some of my greatest lessons, however, have come from my personal life. A simple macaroni and cheese dinner led to a 51-year marriage, reminding me that life's most meaningful moments often begin in the simplest ways.
Today, I have the privilege of serving families through hospice care, where I've discovered that compassion, empathy, and simply being present can make all the difference during life's most difficult moments.
Perhaps my most challenging role has been caring for my husband after his devastating fall and throughout his journey with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and Parkinson's disease. While the road hasn't been easy, it has taught me resilience, gratitude, and the incredible strength that comes from love.
If there's one lesson I've learned, it's this: no experience is ever wasted. Every challenge, every success, and every season of life prepares us for what's next. I hope my story encourages you to embrace your own journey with purpose, knowing that each chapter is helping shape the person you're becoming.
